Performance tuning in SAP often has a tendency to be seen as an SAP Basis activity. The main amounts of resources are used on checking the settings of system parameters and hardware/system sizing.
But when this is completed, you still might run into performance problems in your SAP R/3 installation.
TUNING FROM A DEVELOPMENT POINT OF VIEW
The reason is to be found in the other part of your installation which actually generates the performance problems: the programs, reports and transactions run-ning on your system.
These programs are a mix of SAP Standard programs and programs which you have developed yourself.
With higher volumes of data, you probably will experience increasing per-formance problems.
The cure is to tune your running pro-grams, reports and transactions.
BEHIND THE SCENES
In order to avoid such performance problems, it’s very important to under-stand the underlying architecture of SAP R/3.
What happens behind the scenes af-fects the development done in SAP R/3. You have to know the architecture of ABAP, the application server, the network and the database server.
Based on this knowledge, it is possible to pin-point the key-issues to which you as a developer have to pay attention .
HOW TO GET STARTED – AS AN INSPIRATION
But which programs/transactions are actually the ones that have a perform-ance problem ? And how does this affect the total performance in the system? Do we always have a performance problem when we access the same tables? Is it only within specific modules that we have problems?
In order to get started you need an overview over the situation: Which pro-grams/reports/transactions are the right candidates for tuning?
SAP has several tools available, which will give you a first overview. Based on this, you can prioritize the tuning to solve worst cases first.
Then the tuning can start. It has to be constantly monitored, in order to check the effect of the single tuning activities.
